The same post flops on every network. Here's why.Refract

You ship something.

You ship something. You write one good post about it. Then you paste it into Bluesky, Mastodon, Discord and your blog, and it does nothing anywhere.

It's not the idea. It's that every network reads posts differently.

What each network actually wants

  • Bluesky: short, one idea, conversational. 300 characters is a hard wall.
  • Mastodon: plain and hype-free. Use CamelCase hashtags (#OpenSource, not #opensource) so screen readers can read them, and add alt text to every image. People notice when it's missing.
  • Pinterest: a search engine with pictures. A vertical image, a keyword-rich title, and a description that answers "what do I get if I click?"
  • Discord: a room full of regulars. Announcements that sound like a press release get ignored; write like a person.
  • DEV: people come here to learn. A post that teaches one thing beats a launch announcement every time.

Why nobody does this

Rewriting costs more than writing. Five networks means five versions, five tones, five sets of limits. So we paste instead, and wonder why nothing lands.

A fix you can use today

Before you write any post, write the point as a three-line note:

  1. The point: one sentence.
  2. One detail: an example or a fact.
  3. What to do: the link, offer or next step.

Then write each network's version from that note, not from each other. The fifth version won't drift from the first, and each one can fit its network.

Full disclosure

That three-line note is exactly how we built Refract: you write the note, an AI agent for each network writes a version that fits, and nothing goes out until you approve it. It's free for 14 days at https://refract.social. The note trick works with or without it.
