You can learn most of what matters about a supplement in five minutes, without any special knowledge, if you know where to look. The test below works in a shop aisle, on a product page, or anywhere a label is available, and it will filter out most weak products before you spend anything.

Minute one: find the serving definition. How many capsules, tablets, or scoops make one serving, and how many servings does the container hold? If you cannot find that information quickly, the label is already failing you. Minute two: check whether ingredient amounts are listed individually or hidden inside a blend. Individual amounts allow comparison; a blend total does not.

Minute three: look for testing. A credible product mentions independent, third-party testing of finished batches, not just testing of raw ingredients. If the only testing claim is vague, treat it as no claim at all. Minute four: read the claims critically. Does the product promise specific results, or does it describe what an ingredient has been studied for, with appropriate caution? The difference between those two styles tells you a great deal about the manufacturer.

Minute five: check the cautions. Who should avoid this product, and what interactions are flagged? A label with thoughtful cautions is more trustworthy, not less, because it shows the manufacturer has considered real users rather than ideal ones.

The Supplement Rating applies a longer version of this test to every product it reviews, and its label-checking guide walks through each check in detail. A recent review of a slimming tea formula shows the five-minute test applied to a real label, from serving definition to testing claims. Run the test before you buy, and the supplement aisle becomes far less confusing.
