Most of what I write during the day is faster to say than to type. So I built Tagara, a small dictation app for macOS.

Hold ⌥, speak, let go

Hold the right ⌥ key, talk, let go. The text is typed wherever your cursor is: the terminal, Slack, the browser, any text field. A sentence becomes text about 0.2–0.4 s after you release the key.

Works wherever you can type

Everything runs on your Mac. Transcription uses the open Parakeet model on Apple Silicon's Neural Engine. The audio is never saved or sent anywhere, and there's no account. When idle it uses 0% CPU and the mic stays closed.

Nothing leaves your Mac

  • English and Portuguese, detected on every dictation
  • Puts your clipboard back the way it was after typing
  • Local history of the last 50 dictations (you can turn it off)
  • Native SwiftUI menu bar app, light and dark mode

Free and open source (MIT). macOS 15+, Apple Silicon. It isn't signed with an Apple developer certificate yet, so macOS asks you to allow it once.

Feedback welcome, especially on accuracy and latency on different Macs.
