What if AI didn't try to keep you online longer, but helped you put your phone away?

We use technology to navigate almost every part of our lives, but sometimes the best experience is the one that takes us away from our screens.

That's the idea behind OUTSIDE — a privacy-first, AI-powered web application that turns your surroundings, available time, and personal interests into small outdoor adventures.

Instead of recommending another video, app, or digital activity, OUTSIDE gives you a reason to step outside and reconnect with the physical world.

What I Built

OUTSIDE is a screen-free outdoor exploration application designed to transform ordinary walks into personalized, sensory-rich missions.

Whether you have 15 minutes between meetings, 30 minutes for a neighborhood walk, or two hours to explore a nearby trail, OUTSIDE helps turn that time into an intentional outdoor experience.

How It Works

  1. Choose your exploration zone: Use GPS, enter a landmark manually, and configure your preferred geofencing radius.
  2. Set your available time: Choose from 15, 30, 45, 60, or 120-minute adventures.
  3. Select your sensory interests: Explore themes such as flora and canopy, quiet solitude, sensory scavenger hunts, urban shadows, brisk elevation, or sky and twilight.
  4. Generate your mission: AI creates a structured outdoor experience with sensory prompts, field milestones, and exploration guidance.
  5. Put your phone away: Enter Screen-Free Mode, follow the mission from memory, and return when your outdoor session is complete.

Some examples of what a mission might encourage you to do:

  • Find three different leaf patterns along your route.
  • Observe how sunlight changes across buildings and trees.
  • Listen for distinct bird calls without checking your phone.
  • Notice the smell of the earth after rainfall.
  • Spend a minute observing your surroundings without trying to photograph anything.

OUTSIDE also includes an interactive compass, a mission checklist, a copyable Pocket Slip for offline reference, ambient nature sounds, and a disconnect ritual with a synthesized singing-bowl chime.

Built Around Privacy, Not Engagement

I wanted the application to follow a different philosophy from conventional digital products.

  • Zero database: No PostgreSQL, MongoDB, SQLite, or other application database.
  • Zero authentication: No registration, login, or password requirements.
  • Ephemeral location: Location data is handled in client-side memory and is not intentionally persisted by the application.
  • Optional location fuzzing: Users can blur their coordinates by approximately 500 metres before sending them for mission generation.
  • No analytics or tracking pixels: The application is designed without conventional user-tracking infrastructure.
  • Procedural audio: Nature-inspired soundscapes and chimes are synthesized directly in the browser.

The goal isn't to replace one digital habit with another. It's to use AI as a temporary bridge between the digital and physical worlds.

OUTSIDE is designed for students, remote workers, people who spend long hours at their desks, urban explorers, and anyone who wants a simple reason to spend more intentional time outdoors.

The best way to experience OUTSIDE is to generate a mission, start the disconnect ritual, and actually follow the instructions outdoors.

The application is built to make the phone less important as the experience progresses.

🌲 OUTSIDE — The Screen-Free Outdoor Exploration

#devchallenge #hf26challenge

A modern, privacy-first web application designed to help people disconnect from screens and reconnect with the living world.

Built with Next.js 14, Tailwind CSS, and the Groq API (powered by open-weight LLaMA 3.3 70B Versatile), OUTSIDE crafts personalized, sensory-rich outdoor exploration missions based on your location, geofencing radius, available time, and mindful interests.

🛡️ Privacy-First Architecture

OUTSIDE was engineered with a strict anti-surveillance, anti-addiction philosophy:

Pillar Implementation
Zero Database No PostgreSQL, MongoDB, SQLite, Redis, or cloud database exists.
Zero Authentication No accounts, logins, emails, passwords, or tracking cookies.
Zero Persistent Tracking Geolocation is read into volatile client memory (RAM) for seconds and evaporates on refresh.
Privacy Fuzzing Optional jitter mechanism (~500m coordinate blur) so exact GPS coordinates are never sent.
Zero Analytics & Telemetry No Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, tracking beacons, or third-party audio CDNs.

The project is built with Next.js 14, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, and the Groq API.

Run Locally

Clone the repository and install the dependencies:

git clone <your-repository-url>
cd <your-project-directory>
npm install
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Optionally, create a .env.local file and configure your Groq API key:

GROQ_API_KEY=your_groq_api_key
GROQ_MODEL=llama-3.3-70b-versatile
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Start the development server:

npm run dev
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Open http://localhost:3000 in your browser.

For a production build:

npm run build
npm run start
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

The application can generate missions through its procedural fallback engine when a Groq API key is not configured.

How I Built It

The core idea was to make AI useful without making the application itself another destination for endless screen time.

The AI Layer: LLaMA 3.3 70B Versatile

OUTSIDE uses LLaMA 3.3 70B Versatile, an open-weight language model accessed through Groq's inference API.

The model receives the exploration preferences needed to generate a mission, including the selected time window, sensory theme, terrain preference, and configured exploration area.

Rather than returning an unstructured paragraph, the application requests structured JSON that can be used to render interactive mission cards.

This allows the frontend to present actionable activities, sensory anchors, and sequential milestones in a predictable format.

One important distinction: LLaMA 3.3 70B Versatile is an open-weight model, while Groq provides the hosted inference service. OUTSIDE uses open-weight AI without requiring users to run a large model locally.

Why Next.js and TypeScript?

Next.js provides the application structure, interactive frontend, and server-side API route.

TypeScript helps define predictable mission data structures, while Tailwind CSS supports the nature-inspired interface and responsive design.

The server-side route keeps the application's configured Groq API key out of the browser bundle. The client can request missions without directly exposing the server's secret key.

What Happens When AI Is Unavailable?

I didn't want the experience to break simply because an API key was missing or an external service was unavailable.

That's why OUTSIDE includes a procedural mission engine.

When live AI generation cannot be used, the application can fall back to locally generated mission content. This makes the core experience accessible during development and helps reduce dependence on a single external service.

The Screen-Free Experience

The most important part of OUTSIDE isn't the mission generator. It's what happens after a mission is generated.

A short breathing animation and synthesized chime introduce the disconnect ritual. The screen then transitions into an OLED-black pocket display with a countdown timer.

An emergency peek provides a quick way to check the objective when needed, while a return chime signals the end of the session. Users can then reflect on the experience without storing their reflections in an application database.

The soundscapes are generated with the Web Audio API rather than streamed from an external audio service.

Together, these features are intended to make the transition away from the screen feel deliberate instead of abrupt.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation matters because it gives developers more ways to experiment with AI beyond conventional chatbots, recommendation feeds, and productivity assistants.

For OUTSIDE, the important question wasn't simply whether a language model could generate text. It was whether that capability could encourage a real-world activity while respecting the user's privacy.

Using an open-weight model gave me access to a capable language model that could be integrated into a focused application through a hosted inference service.

That combination made it possible to experiment with personalized outdoor missions without building or maintaining my own large-model infrastructure.

Open innovation also makes this kind of application easier to extend. Developers can explore alternative open-weight models, different inference providers, or eventually local inference, depending on hardware, latency, cost, and privacy requirements.

The privacy-first architecture is equally important. OUTSIDE doesn't need an account system, a behavioral profile, or a database of past activities to provide value.

It demonstrates a different direction for AI applications:

  • AI that encourages action instead of prolonged consumption.
  • Personalization without requiring a persistent user profile.
  • Useful experiences that can continue through a procedural fallback.
  • Technology designed to help people reconnect with their surroundings.

Open innovation isn't only about making models available. It's also about giving developers the freedom to rethink what software should optimize for.

In this case, the objective isn't more engagement, more sessions, or more time in an application.

It's more time spent outside.
