Why I Don't Trust AI Platforms to Keep My Work Safe

Last week, a popular AI platform announced they were changing their data retention policy. Conversations older than 90 days would be automatically deleted unless you had a paid plan.

I had months of valuable work sitting on that platform. Architecture decisions. Code reviews. Client strategy sessions. All of it at risk of vanishing.

That's when I realized: trusting a platform with your AI conversations is like trusting a landlord with your diary. It's not theirs to keep — or delete.

The Ownership Problem

When your AI conversations live only on a platform, you don't own them. The platform does. They can:

• Change access policies without warning
• Delete old conversations to save storage
• Go down during an outage, locking you out
• Redesign their interface, making old conversations impossible to find
• Shut down entirely

Every one of these has happened to real users. The platform doesn't owe you anything beyond their terms of service.

I started exporting every meaningful conversation immediately. Not at the end of the week. Not "when I have time." Right after it ends.
