I've been tracking the platform across three major model releases and put together a detailed breakdown of what's different between each generation from a practical standpoint:
Gen-3 Alpha → Motion Brush for region-specific animation. Great for prototyping. Weak character consistency. ~4 seconds of usable output.
Gen-4 → Character consistency solved. Reference image input. Spatial understanding leap. But Motion Brush removed — replaced by Aleph (post-generation editing) and Act-Two (performance capture).
Gen-4.5 → Current top-ranked model on Video Arena. Native audio generation. Multi-shot editing. API available for integration. But credit costs are steep — roughly 25 seconds of footage on the $12/month plan.
GWM-1 → Runway's world model. Real-time physics simulation, interactive avatars, robotics SDK. Early stage but worth watching if you're in the simulation or agent space.
